Secondary school graduates build a rocket and a satellite

CP Katsina...displays remnant of the rocketCP Katsina...talks with the creative minds
A SCARY but heart-warming incident happened in Imo State on September 27, 2013. Two teenagers, Gideon Emenike and Chibuisi Nwafor, aged between 16 and 17 years, performed a feat which not only shocked their rural community of Umuchima Ubaha, Okigwe LGA, but the whole state. It also had the state Police Commissioner, Mohammed Katsina, scampering to the community. The teenagers launched a rocket, which both of them fabricated, into space.
Thirty minutes, and over five kilometres later, it crashed into the backyard of Augustine Eke, a pensioner. The sound was deafening. And the villagers did an Usain Bolt.
The first report Katsina got was that a bomb, the handiwork of some hoodlums, had exploded in the area. So, he went prepared. But on arrival, he was taken aback. Hoodlums were not at work. It was two gifted teenagers, putting their God-given talents into practice. Katsina described their action as “excessively reckless,” but noted: “It was an exercise into the world of science and technology by some adventurous, skillful, and intelligent young boys with incredible creativity.”
Secondary school graduates
Here is the story of Gideon and Ndubuisi. The two are secondary school graduates who passed out in 2012. Due to financial constraints, they have not been able to go further. The road to their feat, according to one of them, Gideon, who attended Federal Government College, Okigwe, started when he was still in school. While in SS1, he was asked to do a school project. He built a helicopter. In SS2, he built a rocket which he took to a national competition in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He was adjudged the second best. At another competition organised by the Society for Science and Technology, he again came second. At an Olympiad competition, he also came second, and was told that he would represent Nigeria at a competition in Brazil. That never happened. His school principal, he said, called him one day and told him he was no longer going to be Nigeria’s representative. He holds it against the principal. “I still dont know why the principal cancelled the trip. This frustrated me somehow, but later, I picked up from where I dropped, and started again,” he says.

No N500 billion SURE-P funds Is Missing Says Dr Christopher Kolade

Christopher Kolade on Thursday said his resignation as Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) was not because of the alleged missing N500 billion SURE-P funds.
Mr. Kolade told journalists in Abuja that his resignation was rather on age grounds.
He said that he had explained in his letter of resignation sent to president Goodluck that having attained 80 years; he wanted to slow down on energy-demanding activities.
On  Alleged missing N500 billion SURE-P funds
Mr. Kolade said that it was unfortunate that some media houses did not do enough investigation on the alleged missing N500 billion before going to press.
“To write an editorial based on rumour (because they refused to get the truth before writing) is a waste of energy and a betrayal of trust.
“The media has the responsibility of informing the public and they (it) must do so with facts,’’ Mr. Kolade said.

Soldiers, police stop Tinubu, Buhari, others at INEC office

Soldiers, riot policemen and other security agencies on Thursday confronted the leaders of the All Progressives Congress during their march to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja to protest against the November 16 Anambra state governorship election.
After a strategic meeting in the APC’s new secretariat in Wuse 2 in the Federal Capital Territory, which lasted about three hours, the party leaders took to the streets and embarked on a procession to INEC’s office in Maitama District.
The protesters however met a stiff resistance from stern-looking security operatives comprising the Police, soldiers, SSS and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

FG Directs Federal Universities To Re-Open

Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike gave the directive and also asked the vice-chancellors to ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment to carry out academic activities.
He added that any staff who failed to resume on or before December 4, 2013 automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution and that vice-chancellors are allowed to advertise vacancies for their positions in their institution.
Mr Wike further said that the Federal Government has come to the conclusion that the continued industrial action is an attempt by the Academic Staff Union of Universities to sabotage all efforts to address the issues, despite the commitment of government.
As a responsible government it cannot allow the continuous closure of public institutions as this poses danger to the education system and the future of Nigerian youths.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been directed to ensure compliance of the directives by the various institutions.

Latvia's PM resigns over supermarket roof collapse

latvia
Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis resigned Wednesday, appearing to accept ultimate political responsibility over the collapse last week of a supermarket roof in the capital Riga that killed 54 people.
At least 40 other people were wounded in the incident, one of Europe's worst roof-related disasters in several decades.
Dombrovskis was the longest serving prime minister in Latvia's history.
Police have opened a criminal investigation into the cause of last week's tragedy.
Preliminary reports indicate the roof caved in due to either faulty construction or building activities on the roof, where workers were creating a garden area and children's playground.

Asari Dokubo arrested in Benin Republic

The ex-militant Asari Dokubo was arrested in Benin Republic today. Read the press release from his council ..
Today, Tuesday, November 26, 2013, my friend and client, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, around the hours of 1:00pm and 2:00pm by the country’s gendarmes (Police Force).
He was picked up around the Lubeleyi roundabout and taken to an unknown destination. We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched as at this evening and nothing incriminating was found.
We think his arrest and detention is a ploy by certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the Beninoise government to keep him away as 2015 approaches.

We call on the Nigerian government to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo-Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria.
Meanwhile, we shall be liaising immediately with our colleagues in that country to enforce his fundamental rights.

Thank you.
 FESTUS KEYAMO, ESQ.

Happy 31st Birthday Don Jazzy
